Thai BL TV Show: Love in the Air

Thai BLs have been gaining popularity, and it seems like 2022 is the year for NSFW shows, particularly gay romance stories set in Thailand. Love in the Air is a 13-episode TV show, with an additional special episode, that takes place in an architecture college. This captivating lankorn (Thai drama) revolves around two first-year students who find themselves falling in love.

A Tale of Two Couples

Love in the Air primarily focuses on the lives of Sky and Rain, who become close friends. The show delves into their interconnected love stories, exploring the ups and downs they face in their relationships.

Rain’s Infatuation

Rain initially develops a crush on a girl named Ple, who, in turn, is infatuated with Payu, an alumnus and a popular figure among the students. Rain’s perception of Payu changes after a chance encounter with him. Seeing the widespread attraction towards Payu, Rain resolves to reveal his true preferences to Ple by making Payu fall in love with him—a somewhat unconventional approach.

Sky’s Guarded Heart

Sky, on the other hand, has a cynical view of love due to a past traumatic experience. After a brief encounter with Prapai, Payu’s biker friend, Sky engages in a one-night stand, driven by a perceived “exchange” of favors. While trying to distance himself from Prapai, Sky realizes that he cannot forget their time together. Prapai, deeply affected by their encounter, begins pursuing Sky relentlessly, hoping to make the emotionally guarded Sky fall in love.

An Unconventional Storytelling Approach

The 13-episode BL drama divides the narratives of the two couples into separate parts. The first seven episodes focus on Payu and Rain’s love story, while Sky and Prapai serve as supporting characters. The final six episodes shift the spotlight to Prapai and Sky’s journey towards love, with Payu and Rain taking a secondary role.

From a storytelling perspective, this approach created an awkward gap between Sky and Prapai’s initial meeting and their subsequent interactions. It was somewhat perplexing that Prapai seemed to forget about Sky during the first six episodes, despite their previous night together. Narrating their story in a linear format from the beginning could have provided more insights into Sky’s traumatic past and the couple’s gradual development, rather than compressing everything into a single episode at the end.

Beautiful Romances

Despite the narrative structure, both love stories possess their own beauty and charm. Rain’s journey from discomfort to genuine affection for Payu compensates for the initial uncomfortable encounter. Their intimate scenes are sensually portrayed, showcasing the actors’ trustful bond. Sky and Prapai’s story, on the other hand, explores the healing power of love and presents Prapai as a model Thai BL boyfriend.

While Sky and Prapai’s relationship feels slightly rushed due to its limited episodes, their storyline would have benefitted from a linear narrative, allowing for further exploration of Sky’s past trauma and a more gradual progression in the couple’s development.

A Glimpse into Happily Ever Afters

The special episode of Love in the Air provides fans with a glimpse into the happily ever afters of both couples. It offers unexpected surprises, particularly in the NC (No Children/18+) scenes between the characters, further enhancing the viewing experience.

Looking towards the future, the chemistry between Boss “Daddy” (Payu) and Noeul (Rain) indicates the potential for exciting projects together, potentially even in the realm of mafia shows. The SkyPai storyline deserves its own dedicated full BL show, and it would be wonderful to see FortPeat, the actors portraying Sky and Prapai, in more television productions as well.
