A Plague Tale: Requiem Plot Synopsis

The story of A Plague Tale: Requiem takes place in 14th Century France, plagued by the deadly disease. Amicia and her brother Hugo find themselves back in the midst of this plague-ridden world, seeking a normal life in the south. However, Hugo’s curse prevents them from attaining the normalcy they desire.

In their quest to end the Macula curse that plagues Hugo, Amicia and Hugo, accompanied by their friend Lucas and mother Beatrice, embark on a journey to find answers. They set their sights on Marseille, but the enigmatic island of La Cuna holds the key to their salvation, or so they hope.

The central aspect of this game lies in the bond between Amicia and Hugo. As players progress through the game, they witness Amicia’s internal conflict, grappling with themes of death, vengeance, and righteousness. Amicia is torn between her love for her brother and her desperate efforts to prevent the destruction and chaos he unintentionally brings about.

The history of Basilius and the Child of Embers

The inseparable bond between Amicia and Hugo serves as the foundation of the story. However, as the story unfolds, the siblings are separated, leading to chaos and turmoil. Before reaching this critical point, Amicia, Hugo, and Sophia arrive on La Cuna, an island that holds shocking revelations. They discover that the townsfolk worship a deity known as the Child of Embers.

Arnaud, seeing an opportunity to settle his unfinished business with Count Victor, tries to manipulate Hugo into using his rat powers to kill him. Amicia foils the plan, resulting in Arnaud’s arrest. Count Victor and Countess Emilie welcome Amicia and Hugo into the castle, where they learn about their past connection to the Child of Embers. Surprisingly, the story of the previous Macula carrier, Basilius, closely mirrors Hugo’s own predicament.

Further exploration of the castle reveals that Basilius, imprisoned by the Order in an attempt to contain the Macula, succumbed to the dark power, resulting in the Justinian plague. This historical event is widely regarded as the first major plague pandemic, marking a significant turning point in history.

Why does the Count want to kill Amicia?

Inside the castle, Count Victor, driven by a desire to preserve Countess Emilie’s sanity, concocts a fabricated story about Hugo being the Child of Embers. In a brutal encounter, Count Victor attacks Amicia, injuring her severely. He intends to take Hugo away, convinced of his role as the savior of La Cuna.

The shocking truth is revealed when Victor admits to manipulating Emilie, who had endured parental abuse and clung to the belief in the Child of Embers. Amicia, later captured by Victor, endures taunting and is lured into a one-on-one combat. Beatrice, their mother, tragically falls victim to Emilie’s sacrifice to the Child of Embers on the stage.

What happens to La Cuna?

As Hugo awakens and witnesses the aftermath of the sacrifice, his control over the rats intensifies. In a fit of rage and under the influence of the Macula, Hugo unleashes a horde of rats upon Emilie and Victor’s soldiers, decimating them. However, Count Victor manages to escape the onslaught.

Together with Lucas, Amicia and Hugo find themselves underground, navigating their way back to the surface. During this tumultuous journey, Amicia stumbles upon a hidden room, where she finds solace in tears. Eventually, the group is reunited with Sophia, and they make their escape from La Cuna.

Does the Count catch up? Does Arnaud survive?

Unfortunately, Count Victor pursues Sophia’s ship, leading to a dramatic boarding and subsequent shipwreck. Knocking out Hugo, Victor takes him to Marseille, oblivious to the fact that Hugo’s powers are rendered ineffective in water. Meanwhile, Hugo believes Amicia to be dead, after witnessing her getting wounded during a confrontation with Arnaud.

Lucas and Sophia manage to survive the shipwreck, while Arnaud’s fight with Victor spills over to the shores of Marseille several days later. Victor, seeking vengeance, triumphs over Arnaud in a fatal duel. Yet, as his life fades away, Arnaud removes Victor’s helmet and urges Amicia to take the shot. Amicia, armed with her sling, fulfills Arnaud’s plea, delivering a fatal blow to Victor’s face.

What happens in Marseille?

Awakening in Marseille, Hugo succumbs entirely to the Macula, unleashing its destructive power upon the city. With Sophia injured and unable to continue, Lucas and Amicia venture into the heart of this plague-stricken city, determined to find and confront Hugo. The rats roam freely, wreaking havoc and leaving destruction in their wake.

With Hugo fully merged with the Macula, Amicia faces an impossible choice. Hugo implores her to kill him as the only means to stop the devastation. The outcome differs based on the player’s choice, either with Amicia personally ending Hugo’s life or allowing Lucas to fulfill this heartbreaking task. The story concludes, bidding farewell to a beloved character and leaving the lingering question of the cycle continuing.

Goodbye, King Hugo

In the epilogue, set a year later, Amicia, now with a shaved head as a reminder of the past, reunites with Sophia. They reflect on their experiences and briefly mention Lucas. Together, they venture into the woods, with Sophia pursuing a new trade and leaving her pirate life behind. Amicia, driven by curiosity, sets out to explore the world in search of the next Carrier and Protector, wherever they may emerge.

Before embarking on her new adventure, Amicia pays a final visit to Hugo’s gravesite atop a mountain. Today, flowers adorn his grave, symbolizing the peace he has found. The serene mountains and birds perched upon stone croppings evoke memories of Hugo’s dream. Perhaps, in retrospect, his dream held a deeper meaning, one that foreshadowed his ultimate fate and the events that followed.

Is Amicia to blame for the Macula consuming Hugo?

An interesting notion arises that Amicia may bear some responsibility for Hugo’s descent into darkness. Throughout the game, Amicia struggles between her affection for Hugo and her determination to secure a cure for him, regardless of the obstacles. In the heat of battle, Amicia’s thirst for revenge becomes evident, as she clashes with enemies without restraint.

Over time, she encourages Hugo to use his rat powers against their foes, inadvertently nurturing his growing power and confidence. The culmination of these tendencies results in a heated argument between the siblings, where Amicia scolds Hugo for taking lives so easily. In a powerful twist, Hugo points out Amicia’s own violent actions throughout their journey, hinting that he may have learned such behavior from her.

This interpretation adds a tragic layer of irony to the story, enriching its thematic depth and complexity.
