Magic: The Gathering Online Welcomes Warhammer 40,000 Commander Decks

Table of Contents

In 2022, Magic: The Gathering captivated its community by releasing a series of Commander Decks inspired by the Warhammer 40,000 universe. These decks quickly gained popularity among players, sparking anticipation for their introduction to Magic: The Gathering Online (MTGO). Despite initial challenges, Wizards of the Coast has now overcome the “technical hurdles” that delayed their digital debut.

Overcoming Technical Hurdles

After a wait of nearly a year and a half since their physical release, the Warhammer 40,000 Commander decks are set to enrich the MTGO experience. A recent announcement on the game’s official website revealed that the beloved decks will be available in the MTGO store starting tomorrow at 10AM PT/6PM GMT.

The collection includes the Forces of the Imperium, The Ruinous Powers, Tyranid Swarm, and Necron Dynasties decks, each priced at $39.99 USD. Players interested in these decks should act swiftly, as they will only be available for purchase until April 5. Once acquired, these cards will become a permanent part of users’ collections, ready to be used in various formats such as Legacy, Vintage, Commander, and Freeform.

It is important to note that these cards will not appear in Treasure Chests, making direct purchase the sole method of acquisition.

A Tribute to Sheldon Menery

On a related note, Wizards of the Coast has announced a new charity Secret Lair in honor of Sheldon Menery, a revered figure in the Magic: The Gathering community and a pioneer of the Commander format. Menery, who passed away last year following a battle with throat cancer, is celebrated through this special edition Secret Lair. The collection features cards that were personally selected by Menery, including Inkshield, Teferi’s Protection, Sheldon, the Commander, and an Italian version of Greater Good, highlighting his Italian heritage.

This Secret Lair will be available for pre-order from February 26 to March 24, with half of all proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society, a gesture that pays homage to Menery’s legacy and contributions to the game.
