Renewed Or Cancelled?
FX has once again surprised us with yet another intriguing espionage series. The Old Man’s season one has a total of seven episodes, each made with the polish of a feature film.
It stars Jeff Bridges as the central character Dan Chase. The name Chase might sound familiar to viewers who are ardent readers. The plot of the show is based on Thomas Perry’s novel of the same name.
Season one was an enthralling watching experience. Its depth and gravitas were truly affecting. Fans of the show are left wondering if we will have a follow-up season to it. The answer and more details about it can be found below!
What is The Old Man about?
The Old Man tells the story of Dan Chase, an ex-CIA agent in hiding. He lives with his dogs, Dave and Carol, but his wife expired a few years back due to Alzheimer’s. He has a daughter, though, named Emily, whom he is very close with but hasn’t seen for a long time. He only converses with her over the phone.
The FBI discovers his location and Chase is now on the run. Old friend Harold Harper is now Assistant Director of the FBI and is the one in charge of hunting him down.
Dan takes Zoe, a middle-aged divorcee hostage when an assassination attempt is made on him by Harper, who sends a professional (Julian) to do the work. A mutual enemy from their past, Faraz Hamzad, resurfaces with a vengeful streak. As we go along in the season, we learn that Hamzad is not really back from the dead for them – he has been there all along, looking for a “ghost” of his own from his past life.
So, there is a little backstory to the answer. The shooting for the first season started in the year 2020 when the dreaded pandemic hit and everything was on lockdown. It resumed shortly, but Jeff Bridges had a dangerous encounter with lymphoma.
The actor fought a severe battle with cancer but finally informed the crew that it was in remission sometime in 2021. After a brief recovery period, he started shooting again. Originally, the first season was set for 10 episodes in total. But given the changed circumstances, it was trimmed down to seven, with longer runtimes.
Numbers-wise, the series performed exceedingly well and broke several viewership records, including becoming FX’s most-watched cable series when it was first released.
The critical appreciation plus sustained viewership urged the network to renew it for season two. So yes, we will be having a second season!
FX’s entertainment President Eric Schrier said this when announcing the same. “Jonathan E. Steinberg, Dan Shotz, and Warren Littlefield have done a fantastic job with The Old Man, which delivers on the powerful intrigue and breathtaking action of Thomas Perry’s book.
The stellar cast led by Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman, and Alia Shawkat is really connecting with audiences and we are excited to get to work on season two with our colleagues at 20th Television and this fantastic team.”
What we know about season 2 so far:
Not much. Apart from the announcement, we do not have a premiere date or details about the plot, yet. From what we know, the production is yet to start, at the time of writing.
There are hopes from FX insiders that production will begin sometime in November this year, but nothing is final.
The story should pick right up from where season one ended: Emily discovering that her actual name is Parwana, Hamzad’s daughter, whom Abby and Dan took with them when they escaped. We will update you as and when we get more details!
